Apparently that's supposed to activate some sensor that could fix whatever's wrong here. We also tried a more out-there solution that some people online have said works, just taking it in a firm grip with the lid slightly open and giving it a good shake. So the machine seems to actually be turning on and off, but the screen is blacked out. Hitting the power button on the laptop will start and stop the phone from charging. However, when we plug my phone in, the MacBook charges it. It charges fine, but it won't turn on - seemingly. We dug it out this morning and have been playing with it a bit today, here's what we've got: It died within a year or two of when she got it, and she was really excited to get a new computer so she didn't put any effort into getting it fixed. My girlfriend has an old MacBook Air (sometime between 20, she can't remember when she got it) she wants to get working again as a gift for a friend who's going through a rough time and needs a laptop.
